Wally Anderson, 78 of Pierre, died Monday, May 7, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Friday, May 11 at Lutheran Memorial Church with inurnment at Riverside Cemetery
Wallace T. Anderson was born on September 20, 1933 to William and Hannah Anderson in Redfield, SD. He attended school and graduated from Redfield High School. He attended Dakota State College in Brookings where he took clerical classes. He was then drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska.
Wally met Ida Berry at a Homecoming dance in Redfield. It was “love at first sight” and they were married on June 28, 1958. To this union, four children were born: Chad, Tauna, Robert and Nicolle. The family lived in Redfield for 16 years then moved to Pierre where Wally worked for his brother-in-law at Monte Glenn and Kenny Construction. Combining construction and the SD winters, Wally looked for full time employment with the Pierre School District. He remained there until his retirement in early 2012.
Wally was an accomplished gardener, priding himself with having straight rows and sharing everything he grew with those he loved! In his younger years, he was a bowler, a softball player and even made an attempt to teach Ida to play pool. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying everything from youth local sports to professionals. He was a dedicated member of Lutheran Memorial church, taking comfort in his daily scriptures and doing whatever tasks the church asked of him. Wally’s family will miss his calm and gentle spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ida; his children: Chad (Diana) Anderson of West Fargo, ND, Tauna (Joe) Wolf of Pierre, Rob (Jill) Anderson of Sleepy Eye, MN and Nicolle (Chris) Dew of Horace, ND; seven grandchildren: Jordan, Elizabeth, Bailey, Brady, Ashley, Trey and Kylie; and his siblings: Helen Eckman, Carl Anderson, Eleanor Frankenstein, Martha Hawkinson, Lennert Anderson and Ruth Jessen. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Philip and Paul Anderson.
